PETE

Pete’s easygoing nature was long gone. The last sight he had of Jena was her pale, trembling features. Those assholes restraining her wasn’t something he’d easily forget. His roaring snarl was choked because those fuckers had put something over his mouth. Of course, if his mouth and hands were available, his snarling would be the least of everyone’s worries.

The two guards holding him kept a tight grip. All he had to do was stiffen his muscles and he wouldn’t suffer any bruises. Now that he dealt with the stinging pain, he looked around.

Fuck! He had to be on that moon base his brother Zamush told them about the other day. The one Ben and Julienne found themselves stuck on. The ceiling, walls, and floor were a sturdy, iridescent metal that might be a mixture of titanium and diamond. No windows, so he couldn’t see outside to verify his suspicions.

Pete walked with his new best friends down a narrow corridor with minimal lighting. He squinted in the low light. Hadn’t his mother told him the Akurns weren’t used to bright light?

The guards stopped in the middle of the hallway as their leader, Bahadur, turned to him.

The sneer on the man’s pale face made Pete smile. He just loved it when he irritated the shit out of the bad guys.

“Disgusting piece of yetu.” The man spat at him in the Akurn language. “Release the kartr from him.”

The thing covering Pete’s mouth dissolved, as did the bindings on his wrists.

Once the restraints evaporated, Pete wiped his sweaty lips with the back of his hand. His smile widened. No way would he let this idiot know he understood everything he said. Well, except for whatever the hell a yetu was.

“Put him in there.” Part of the wall dissolved, revealed a small, one-room holding cell.

They shoved Pete in.

He stumbled but righted himself before he landed in an undignified face-plant. He turned with arms crossed and spoke in English. “Okay, asslips. Now what?”

“Now you wait until the commander decides what to do with you,” the brawny Bahadur replied in halting English before barking a command in Akurn to enclose the wall.

The last thing Pete saw before the door snapped in place was the alien guard sneering down his nose and glaring. Well, at least he didn’t get injured this time. He rubbed his chest and looked around. He wasn’t really taking in his surroundings; his thoughts were of Jena. No telling what agency that guy Claude worked for.

A new glance at the claustrophobic space wasn’t helpful. A creature who craved the outdoors, he hated being stuck in a room the size of an average cell. He rubbed over the pain in his chest.

The walls, floor and ceiling had the same iridescent sheen as the corridor. A narrow bunk was on his right, while a toilet and sink were on the left.

Oh nice. The Akurns were kind enough to include a flat pillow on a hard-looking mattress. Give his captors five stars for their shining example of hospitality etiquette.
